Testimonials

In 2016 while in Washington, D.C., I saw a man selling a Muslim Journal newspaper while standing in front of a masjid. In a quick moment of observation and intimate recall, I could tell this man had been trained by a courier who was a dawah master. I called my children around that man to watch him perform the expert sales techniques that I remembered from my childhood. I asked the Muslim brother about his unique skills. He said he had once worked closely alongside the author, Khalid Amin. I was not surprised.
Shaykh Khalid has a proven track record in giving dawah (invitations) all over the USA and abroad. He is a quiet man and excellent listener. I have known him for over 40 years to be kind, generous, wise, and sincere in helping to heal people from many spiritual illnesses.
I know, as a companion of Shaykh Khalid, and the first person to be with him from the beginning (1972), that this book is the living proof of the dawah which brought to life everything it touched in its path.
I remember my father going out to various places that he would call his office. Such locations were literally right in the middle of the public sidewalk. He would stand there every day passing out fliers about Allah. The only days he wouldn’t be at such places would be when he was sick, traveling, or dealing with another community issue. I remember meeting countless non-Muslims in my father’s office downtown, only later to see the same people praying in the front row of the masjid.
For over 40 years (1975), I’ve had the blessing and opportunity to soldier with Shaykh Khalid Amin. Our experiences have expanded and covered over five continents. I’ve never had the chance to work with anyone better at calling and inviting people to Allah and His Messenger than Imam Khalid. It would take volumes to talk about or explain where we’ve been and what we’ve been able to do with Allah’s help.

About the Book

This book doesn’t attempt to explain Islam. It gives the reader, whether novice or expert, a window into the wisdom and experience of a man who might be described as a typical practitioner. His focus throughout his time as a Muslim has been to give dawah; invite others to a way of life he firmly believes is best for mankind. Described herein is the practice (not the theory) of Islam. There are manners and etiquettes. There are inner contemplations. There are pathways to peace through all circumstances. All of these things contribute to teaching the reader to find personal peace and healing. Additionally, and perhaps most importantly, this is a manual for those who would like to increase the peace they have found and to share it with others. This is important because this manual describes the practice of what is largely a lost art; an art which is needed more today than at most times in history.

About the Author

Khalid Amin, of Staten Island, NY, has traveled widely, as far from home as India. He attended a local private school and served as a Catholic choir boy. He grew up in racially charged times and most days had to fight to survive.

In his late teens, he joined the Nation of Islam, which made the change to the Sunnah in 1975. He carried the message of Islam as he understood it throughout the US and the Caribbean.

He studied Arabic with Sheikh Abdul Hamid prior to being awarded a free Hajj in 1979 by Muhammad Ali. Sheikh Abdullah Naseef helped him join Umm al-Qura University. Since then, he has studied with sheikhs from the Haram and Dar al-Hadith in Mecca, from Morocco, and from Madinah.

He currently translates, writes, and teaches dawah in Madinah with his family. This is mentioned in more detail in Dawah: The Lost Art of the Call of Islam.

What is Covered

"Dawah: The Lost Art" systematically covers the principles, methods, and practical aspects of inviting others to Islam. It begins with foundational advice on developing key characteristics of a da’ee, such as sincerity, humility, and patience, before delving into actionable field strategies like capturing attention, making effective presentations, and closing interactions on a positive note. The book also examines interpersonal skills, the importance of spiritual self-reflection, and the role of social work in dawah. With chapters dedicated to real-life stories, wisdom from Islamic teachings, and practical guidance for navigating various environments—from marketplaces to universities—it provides a thorough roadmap for both new and experienced practitioners of dawah.
